Podium for MBM Motorsport on MSA Formula opener

MBM Motorsport hit the ground running with a podium on the opening weekend of the MSA Formula season.

Warlingham driver Jamie Caroline finished second in the second round of his single seater debut at Brands Hatch.

And with teammate Harry Hayek improving as the weekend progressed to end up among the points, it proved a satisfying start to the 2016 campaign for the Kent-based team.

MBM Motorsport team manager James Mundy saw encouraging signs from his two new drivers, but believes there is room for improvement going forward.

He said: “It was a good weekend and we were pleased to get a podium at the start of the season.

“Beforehand we were hoping to be competitive with the bigger teams and we were.

“We were a little behind in the set-up at the beginning which put us slightly on the back-foot.

“But for Jamie to finish with a podium and Harry in the points by the final race was a good start.”

The team were disappointed with the set-ups during testing, but things improved by qualifying.

Jamie, 17, who took the Ginetta Junior crown last season, qualified in eighth place for both races, with Harry in 15th.

Jamie drove well in race one, moving up a few places to finish in sixth.

But in the second race he put down a marker for the rest of the season with a podium in only his second single seater race.

On the reverse grid, he started on slicks and got into the lead, although a clash saw him drop a few places.

After a red flag, he got into the lead again, but over-defended and lost the initiative.

An exciting race saw Jamie gain ground on the leader, but finish second without enough time left to make it count.

With the car improving all the time, the team was hoping for more of the same in the final race.

But after going into the gravel trying to overtake, Jamie was left in 12th by the end.

Australian Harry, 18, finished fourth in the Australian F4 championship last season – which uses the same Ford-powered Mygale car as MSA Formula.

But here he found the going tougher than teammate Jamie, especially after missing time in testing due to problems with the car.

He finished 14th in the first race and 11th in the second, but saved his best performance until the final race when he finished 10th to get in the points with some excellent pace.

James added: “Harry improved as the weekend progressed to get among the points, which was pleasing.

“Jamie drove well in the first race and brilliantly in the second race to get on the podium.

“We are looking to improve and be more competitive as the season progresses. The aim is to be in the top six consistently and we believe we have a good chance with the team and our drivers.”

MBM Motorsport, also known as Jamun Racing, head to Thruxton for testing this week and onto Donington Park for the next round of the Championship on 16-17 April.
